ZESCO Limited Secures Power Supply from South Africa with Support from GreenCo and First Quantum Minerals

ZESCO, with financial backing from GreenCo Power Services Limited (GreenCo) and First Quantum Minerals Ltd (FQM), has secured additional electricity imports from South Africa to help alleviate Zambia’s energy crisis, driven by record low water levels at Lake Kariba, the country’s main hydroelectric source.

This tripartite collaboration will start with 125MW of power imports, potentially increasing to 250MW, fully financed by GreenCo and FQM. Of this, 40MW will be allocated to FQM, while 85MW will support Zambia’s national grid, benefiting households, hospitals, and businesses.

As GreenCo’s Head of Business Development, Wezi Gondwe, explains: “This partnership shows how public and private sectors can work together to secure critical energy supplies for both industrial and residential users.”

By supporting ZESCO in this critical moment, GreenCo continues its mission of ensuring energy security across the region.
